Birds on Electrogrid

Kestrels already occupying nests

Kestrels already occupying nests

Together with the spring in Lithuania, the Common Kestrels started to occupy the nesting boxes, which were made in the frame of the project. The first kestrels in the nesting boxes erected on the poles of the high voltage electricity transmission lines were observed on March 21, 2018, in Klaipėda district. A few days later, March 27-29, birds were seen in other places overall Lithuania. The nesting boxes have been used by the kestrels even before the breeding season for resting or protection from rainy and snowy weather. Even during the winter season kestrels were observed in Klaipėda district as usually a dozen of birds stay over the winter every year. The mid of April is the most intensive time for breeding, as the first eggs will be laid at the end of the month. The kestrels lay up to 6-7 eggs and incubation is taking 30 days. Afterwards chicks are intensively fed by the parents and at the end of June the new generation of kestrel will test the strength of their wings.
