Season 4 - live translation from the kestrels’ nest!

Watch live translation from Common kestrels’ nest on the Klaipėda University building – the female started incubation and probably still lying eggs. When female is incubating eggs, male delivers some prey items and taking place of incubation, when female is eating pray brined by him. Last year this family successfully raised 6 juveniles, while other kestrels on average – 3 offspring.

In the period 2014-2018 in the whole country 580 nest-boxes for Common Kestrel, which is included into the Red Data Book of Lithuania, were erected on the high voltage electricity pylons. Monitoring results from 2018 showed, that 1/3 of the nest-boxes were occupied by birds. According to the calculations, approximately 40% of the national Common Kestrel’s population breeds in the artificial nest-boxes. It confirmed, that lack of the suitable breeding places was one of the main reasons, why the kestrel’s population in Lithuania was not so numerous.

We wish successful breeding season!
